We all need to be aware of a new indicator for strokes! Blood clots and strokes now have a fourth indicator: the tongue.

Let me share a real-life incident that highlights the importance of recognizing the signs of a stroke:

During a delightful BBQ gathering, a woman named Jane stumbled and took a small fall. She quickly assured everyone that she was fine and attributed the fall to her new shoes, which caused her to trip over a brick.

Although a little shaken up, Jane continued to enjoy the evening after getting cleaned up and having some food. Unfortunately, things took a drastic turn later when Jane’s husband called to inform everyone that she had been rushed to the hospital. At 6:00 PM, Jane tragically passed away due to a stroke.

Had Jane’s loved ones known how to identify the signs of a stroke, her life may have been saved. It’s important to remember that not everyone who suffers a stroke dies; many end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.

A neurologist emphasizes that time is of the essence when it comes to stroke victims. If medical help can be provided within three hours, the effects of a stroke can often be completely reversed. However, recognizing the signs, getting a diagnosis, and obtaining medical care within this limited timeframe can be quite challenging.

So, how can you identify a stroke? Let me share three simple steps known as STR. Remember them, read them, and ensure that your loved ones know them too!

Identifying a Stroke

Thankfully, strokes can be identified by following these three steps:

  1. S – Ask the individual to SMILE.
  2. T – Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE coherently (for example, “Chicken Soup”).
  3. R – Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.

If the person has difficulty with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency services immediately and communicate the symptoms to the dispatcher.

Additionally, here’s another sign to watch out for: Ask the person to ‘stick’ out their tongue. If the tongue appears ‘crooked’ or moves to one side or the other, it can also be an indication of a stroke.

A cardiologist emphasized that if each person who receives this message shares it with ten people, we can be certain that at least one life will be saved.

I have done my part. Will you?
