The Magic of Coffee in Desserts

Coffee isn’t just for your morning cup; it’s a fantastic ingredient for desserts too. It adds a deep, rich flavor that complements the sweetness perfectly. When mixed with eggs and condensed milk, it creates a flan that’s not just tasty but also has a velvety texture that melts in your mouth.

Ingredients and Steps to Make Coffee Caramel Flan

For the Coffee Caramel:

  • 1/2 cup of sugar (100g)

  • 1/4 cup of water (60ml)

  • 1 tsp of instant coffee

For the Flan:

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 egg yolk

  • 1 tbsp of instant coffee

  • 1 tbsp of warm water

  • 1 can of condensed milk (397g)

  • Fill the same can with milk (290 ml)

  • 1/2 tbsp of liquid vanilla

Crafting the Coffee Caramel

  1. Prepare the Coffee Caramel: In a pan, mix sugar, water, and instant coffee. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes a smooth caramel. Be careful not to burn it.

  2. Coat the Mold: Pour the caramel into the bottom of your mold. Swirl it around to evenly coat the base. Let it cool and harden slightly.

Making the Flan Mixture

  1. Mix Coffee and Water: Dissolve 1 tbsp of instant coffee in 1 tbsp of warm water.

  2. Blend the Ingredients: In a blender, combine the eggs, egg yolk, condensed milk, milk, liquid vanilla, and the coffee mixture. Blend until smooth.

  3. Pour Over Caramel: Carefully pour this mixture over the caramel in the mold.

Cooking the Flan

  1. Steam or Bain-Marie: You can cook the flan in a steamer or in a bain-marie (water bath) on the stove. If using a bain-marie, place the mold in a larger pan and fill the pan with boiling water halfway up the sides of the mold.

  2. Cook Until Set: Cook for about 45-50 minutes. The flan should be firm but still slightly jiggly.

  3. Cool and Unmold: Let the flan cool, then refrigerate it for a few hours. When ready to serve, run a knife around the edges and invert it onto a plate.
